Meningitis Research Foundation’s vision is a world free from meningitis and septicaemia.

The charity funds research to prevent meningitis and septicaemia, and to improve survival rates and outcomes.

MRF promotes education and awareness to reduce death and disability, and gives support to people affected.

  • Meningitis and septicaemia – the blood poisoning form of the disease - can kill in hours.
  • Students are in the second most at risk group from the diseases.
  • More than one in ten people who get the diseases will die.
  • Many more are left with a range of disabilities and after effects that dramatically alter their lives, including amputations and deafness.
  • MRF funds a programme of research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia.
  • There are currently 26 research projects in the programme. The charity has awarded 133 research grants, leading to many advances in the fight against the diseases. The total value of MRF's investment in vital scientific research is over £16 million.
  • The charity's public awareness programme focuses on the people who are at most risk, and those who care for them. Symptoms are clearly set out along with information on how to take fast and effective action if a case is suspected.
  • MRF provides support to those whose lives have been affected by meningitis and septicaemia. We encourage people to realise that they are not alone in coping with the devastating effects of meningitis and septicaemia, by providing a sympathetic listening ear, home visits, specially tailored literature and befriending services.
